AC Repair Pointers – Clean My Drain Line.

How can I tell if my drain line is clogged and I need to clean my drain line?

The simplest was is that the drain pan is full, and the unit is not running because the float valve has shut it off.  Make it a habit to check your drain pan whenever you change or clean the filter, so you can catch any issue right away.

Why is it clogged?  Algae, mold, mildew, and other debris are constantly building up in the drain pan.  This organic and inorganic debris flow into the drain line and clog it.

DIRECTIONS:

Clean My Drain Line
  • Turn off the breaker to your HVAC unit
  • Find your AC drain line. Most AC drain lines are located outside near the condenser unit
  • Attach the end of your wet/dry vacuum to the end of the AC drain line. Seal it securely using duct tape. Turn the vacuum for about 5 minutes to suck out any debris and hopefully clear your clog.
  • Go inside and locate the vent tee. It’s usually located next to the indoor unit that is typically in your closet, garage or attic.  This is a pipe fitting that connects your AC drain line to the drainage tray. Remove the PVC cap from the top of the vent tee.  Pour a mixture of one cup bleach or vinegar and one cup water into the vent tee.
  • Go back outside and turn on the vacuum again for a couple of minutes.
