What Is SEER2?

SEER2 (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2) is the U.S. Department of Energy’s updated efficiency testing standard for central air conditioners and heat pumps. It replaced the older SEER rating system, using a more realistic testing method that better reflects how a system performs in actual ductwork with real-world static pressure — rather than a lab-ideal setup.

Because the testing method changed, SEER2 numbers run slightly lower than the old SEER numbers for a comparably efficient system. A unit rated 15 SEER under the old standard is roughly equivalent to about 14.3 SEER2 — it’s not that the equipment got less efficient, just that it’s measured differently now.

What’s the Minimum SEER2 for Florida?

Florida falls in the Southeast region under DOE’s regional efficiency standards, which carries the highest minimum efficiency requirement in the country for split-system air conditioners, reflecting how much of the year Florida homes rely on air conditioning. • Proper sizing matters more than the rating on the box. An 18 SEER2 system that’s poorly sized for your home will underperform a correctly sized, lower-rated system — this is why a Manual J load calculation matters more than the sticker efficiency number.
• Ductwork condition affects real-world efficiency. Leaky or undersized ducts can erode the benefit of a high-efficiency unit before the air even reaches your rooms.

How to Choose the Right SEER2 Rating for Your Home

• Your current electric bill and usage patterns. Homes that run AC nearly year-round (which describes most of Florida) see a faster payback from higher efficiency than homes in milder climates.
